Microsoft is deprecating the "memberof" capability for dynamic groups, and I'm trying to figure out a practical replacement. So far, the alternatives I can think of seem either overly complicated or extremely manual. How are other administrators planning to recreate this functionality, especially for departments or groups with unusual membership requirements?

I only have two of these groups, but unfortunately they’re both tied to departments with especially unusual membership rules. I’m expecting those to take the most effort to recreate manually.
The fallback seems to be using workbooks or reports to approximate the behavior, then maintaining the memberships through a more manual process. It’s not elegant, but I haven’t seen a straightforward replacement yet.
I hadn’t heard about the change until now. The retirement is currently scheduled for November 3, according to notice MC1448379. I tested these groups briefly before and found them too slow, so I’m curious how organizations that depended on them heavily will handle the transition.
That’s the date I saw too. I only experimented with them for a short time, and the performance made them difficult to rely on, but replacing them still looks painful.
