How can I start learning to code without relying on AI or paid courses?

I'm a teenager who recently finished high school, and I'm still figuring out what career path I want to pursue. I'd like to explore different fields before choosing a course, and programming is one of the areas I'm interested in trying. I'm especially curious whether I can learn to code from scratch using books, videos, documentation, and hands-on projects without having AI write code for me or enrolling in a formal course. I'm currently leaning toward Python. What beginner-friendly resources and learning approach would you recommend?

A good way to learn is to build something simple instead of only watching tutorials. Try a calculator, a text-based game, a unit converter, or a small program that solves a problem in your daily life. Use reference sites and documentation to figure out the pieces you need, then gradually make the project more capable. Practice websites can also help you test your understanding without using AI to solve the exercises for you.

It’s fine to avoid AI while you’re developing your fundamentals. If you ever decide to use it later, treat it like a tutor that explains concepts or points you toward resources—not something that writes the solution for you. You’ll learn much more by struggling with a problem, checking documentation, and debugging your own code first.

If you’re leaning toward Python, start with a beginner-friendly book or tutorial that explains the fundamentals, such as variables, conditionals, loops, functions, and data structures. Dive Into Python is one possible resource, and there are plenty of older books and video courses that don’t depend on AI at all. Once you understand the basics, try writing small programs yourself.

Thanks! I’m looking through Python tutorials now, and I’ll check out some books too.

You can absolutely learn without AI. People learned programming for decades using books, documentation, and courses. Free introductory material is widely available, and an older course can still be perfectly useful for learning core programming concepts. Harvard’s CS50 is also a solid free introduction if you want a broad overview before focusing on Python.
