I'm planning to upgrade from an Intel Core i5-10400F because it seems to be holding back my RTX 3060 12GB in some games and applications. My current system has an RTX 3060 12GB, i5-10400F, 16GB of DDR4 memory, and an MSI PRO H510M-B motherboard. I'm open to replacing the motherboard if necessary, and I'm also considering switching to AMD. What CPU and platform would be a good match for this graphics card without wasting money on excessive performance?

Your current motherboard does not support a worthwhile CPU upgrade beyond what you already have, and it also isn’t compatible with 11th-generation processors. Since you’re willing to replace the board, AMD would be a sensible route. A Ryzen 5 5500 or, preferably, a Ryzen 5 5600 paired with a B550 motherboard would let you reuse your DDR4 memory and RTX 3060. A newer Intel or AMD platform could offer more upgrade potential, but it would likely require DDR5 and cost more.
A Ryzen 5 5600 with a B550 board is probably the best value upgrade here. You can keep your current RAM, graphics card, and other compatible parts. The 5600 is clearly faster than the i5-10400F in CPU-limited games and general performance, while still being a good match for an RTX 3060. The Ryzen 5 5500 is cheaper, but its smaller cache makes the 5600 the better choice if the price difference is reasonable. Later on, you could add another 16GB of RAM and upgrade the GPU.
It’s useful to know that the 5600 is noticeably faster than my current CPU. Would it be about equal to the RTX 3060’s performance, or would the CPU be somewhat stronger or weaker?
I’m fine with replacing the motherboard since I expected that would probably be necessary. AMD is my preference as well.
