I'm putting together my first PC and plan to assemble it myself. Because of my current income and living situation, I'd prefer to spread the cost over a few months instead of making one large purchase. Is that a reasonable approach, or is it safer to save up and buy everything close together? I'd appreciate practical advice about handling warranties, returns, changing prices, and choosing parts.
I'm buying in New Zealand and aiming to keep the initial build below NZ$2,000, not including the graphics card. I plan to use the CPU's integrated graphics until I can afford a dedicated GPU. So far, I've bought a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD and a Lian Li Vector V100R case. I'm still planning to buy a Phanteks AMP GH 750W power supply, a Gigabyte B650E Eagle WF6E motherboard, preferably a 16GB RAM kit when it goes on sale, and a Ryzen 5 7600 processor.

You can buy the parts gradually, but the biggest risk is testing them too late. If something arrives defective, you might miss the retailer’s return window and have to go through the manufacturer’s warranty process instead, which can take longer. Ideally, buy the core components close enough together that you can assemble and test the system while the return periods are still active.
Buying over several months isn’t automatically a bad idea, particularly if paying for everything at once would strain your finances. Just keep receipts, check each store’s return policy, and inspect or test every component as soon as possible. If you have access to another compatible computer, testing parts individually can help identify a problem before the warranty process becomes your only option.
There’s also a pricing argument for buying selected parts early. Some components, such as memory, storage, or graphics cards, can rise or fall substantially in price. Buying those during a good sale can save money, while waiting on parts that change more slowly may be fine. I’d still avoid letting the CPU, motherboard, and RAM sit unused for months unless you’re comfortable accepting the return-window risk.
Component prices and product availability change constantly, so waiting can work in your favor or against you. Keep a parts list and watch for genuine sales, but avoid buying items too early unless you’re confident the build plan won’t change. The motherboard, CPU, and memory are especially worth purchasing as a group because they need to be compatible and are the parts you’ll want to test together.
