Should I upgrade my RX 7800 XT or CPU for high-FPS 1440p gaming?

For 1440p, the RX 7800 XT is not an urgent upgrade unless you specifically want very demanding ray tracing or path tracing. A faster CPU such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 7700X3D, or a newer X3D model could improve frame-time consistency and high-refresh-rate performance. Waiting for a future GPU generation is also reasonable if the current card is playable with a few settings adjusted.

If you want a straightforward graphics upgrade, the RX 9070 XT should be a strong match for 1440p and is much more practical than jumping to an extreme high-end card. However, replacing the 8400F is still worth considering, especially in CPU-heavy games and when targeting more than 100 FPS. Check GPU and CPU usage while playing: near-100% GPU usage points toward a graphics upgrade, while low GPU usage with a fully loaded CPU suggests a processor bottleneck.

I’d upgrade the processor first rather than replacing the graphics card. A Ryzen 5 7500F or 7600, or a stronger gaming chip such as the 7800X3D, would give the RX 7800 XT a better chance of maintaining high FPS at 1440p. The current GPU is still capable of excellent 1440p gaming, so a CPU upgrade may provide better value.

The Radeon RX 9070 XT is probably the fastest sensible GPU within that budget. Compared with the RX 7800 XT, it offers a substantial improvement in regular rasterized games and an even larger gain with ray tracing. That said, the Ryzen 5 8400F is a weak point—it’s effectively a cut-down, laptop-oriented AM5 chip and can limit high frame rates. Before choosing a GPU, check your RAM capacity and speed as well, since those can affect performance.
