I'm building my first PC with an Intel i7-12700K Plus and 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory. The system will mainly be used for 1080p gaming at medium-to-high settings, CAD applications such as CATIA V5, FreeCAD, and SpaceClaim, and visualizing CFD results in ParaView. I'll run OpenFOAM simulations on the CPU rather than the GPU, with models containing several solid and fluid regions and meshes of up to roughly one million cells.
I'm planning to use separate SSDs for Windows and Linux so I can keep the two environments isolated. My current GPU options are a Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB for €585 and an MSI GeForce RTX 5060 Ventus 2X OC 8GB for €490. The price difference is manageable, but €585 is my absolute maximum budget.
Which card would be the better choice for this mix of CAD, ParaView, Linux dual-booting, and gaming? Would CUDA or professional GPU features make the RTX 5060 preferable, or is the RX 9060 XT's extra VRAM and generally better Linux support more useful? Also, how much more important is the CPU than the GPU for this kind of CAD and CPU-based CFD work?

Since the OpenFOAM simulations will run on the CPU, the processor, memory capacity, and storage performance will matter more for those workloads than the graphics card. The GPU mainly affects viewport responsiveness, ParaView rendering, and gaming. For your mesh sizes, 32GB of RAM may be workable, but larger or more complex cases could eventually benefit from 64GB. Before buying, also double-check the exact CPU model and the GPU prices available in Spain, since €585 is relatively high for the RX 9060 XT.
For a dual-boot system, AMD is usually the less troublesome choice under Linux because its drivers are integrated more closely with the open-source graphics stack. That can make setup and long-term maintenance easier, especially if you intend to use GPU-accelerated applications in Linux. Still, verify the requirements of ParaView and any Linux software you’ll actually use, since application support matters more than the general driver reputation.
Check the GPU requirements for CATIA, SpaceClaim, and any rendering features you plan to use before deciding. FreeCAD generally doesn’t depend on CUDA, but some CAD applications have better-tested support for NVIDIA hardware, and certain real-time or professional visualization features may be limited on gaming GPUs regardless of whether they are AMD or NVIDIA. The RTX 5060 could be worthwhile if one of your specific programs benefits from CUDA or NVIDIA-certified features.
The RTX 5060 is the safer option if any of your software or future workflows might need CUDA. The raw performance difference between these cards probably matters less than whether a particular application supports NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem. If CUDA is required, the alternative may be running that workload on the CPU, which can be a much bigger compromise than the GPU performance gap.

My main hesitation is the 8GB of VRAM. Do you think that would be enough for CAD, ParaView, and 1080p gaming in this case?
