Can an 850W PSU Safely Boot a RTX 5090?

I recently acquired a RTX 5090 that currently isn't working, and I'd like to test whether it can be repaired. My only available power supply is a three-year-old 850W unit that has been sufficient for my RTX 4080. I plan to upgrade the PSU if the 5090 works, but would an 850W PSU theoretically provide enough power to boot the card and perform basic testing?

Yes, it will probably boot. Just monitor for instability, shutdowns, unusual connector or cable heat, and avoid overclocking. If the system powers off under load, that’s a sign the PSU or its transient response isn’t adequate—not something to keep pushing.

A quality 850W PSU should be enough to boot the card and may even handle gaming, depending on the rest of the system and the PSU’s ability to handle transient spikes. NVIDIA’s recommended wattage generally accounts for higher-power CPUs and worst-case configurations. Make sure the PSU has the correct, properly connected power cable, and don’t assume every older unit is suitable.

For a temporary test, you can boot it and use a tool such as MSI Afterburner to reduce the power limit to roughly 50–80%. If you decide to keep using the 850W PSU, limiting the card to around 400–450W can reduce the strain considerably. The CPU’s power draw still matters, though.

It should at least idle and boot for testing, but I’d avoid demanding workloads until you have a suitable replacement. The official recommendation for a 5090 is around 1000W, with a modern ATX 3.1 unit in the 1200W range being a more comfortable choice.
