Should I upgrade my CPU, motherboard, and RAM or build a new PC for 4K gaming?

My Core i9-9900K recently failed, and I haven't kept up with PC hardware since I built the system. The only major upgrade I've made was replacing the graphics card with an RTX 3080 Ti. It performed well with my 1440p 165Hz monitor, but I recently switched to a 4K 240Hz OLED display and the system now stutters badly in some games. I'm currently using only 16GB of DDR4 memory, so that may also be contributing to the problem.

I'm trying to decide whether to replace the CPU, motherboard, and RAM while keeping the 3080 Ti, or start over with a completely new build. My original budget is around $2,500, but if I spend that much on a new system, I'd prefer it to include an RTX 5080. I'm considering stretching the budget to $2,700–$3,000 for a prebuilt with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, although I'm not sure whether that would be worthwhile. I'm also concerned about troubleshooting AMD hardware and software issues since I'm not very confident diagnosing problems when something goes wrong.

Would it make more sense to upgrade the platform and keep the 3080 Ti, build a new system around a 5080, or take another approach? I'm in Seattle and don't have convenient access to discounted in-store component bundles.

For 4K gaming, the 3080 Ti is still usable, but demanding games with ray tracing can push it hard. Your 9900K and especially 16GB of RAM are also outdated for a high-end system and could contribute to stuttering. A sensible option is a new CPU, motherboard, and 32GB or 64GB of memory while keeping the 3080 Ti for now. You can then upgrade the GPU later instead of spending your entire budget at once.

I’ve seen the 3080 Ti handle 4K reasonably well, so I suspect the 16GB of DDR4 and the aging CPU platform are a big part of the problem too.

Don’t choose a new GPU solely because the monitor is 240Hz. At 4K, many demanding games will be GPU-limited long before they reach 240 FPS, and upscaling or frame generation may be necessary. First confirm whether the stuttering is caused by the CPU, memory capacity, temperatures, storage, or drivers. If you rebuild, use a current platform with DDR5, at least 32GB of RAM, a quality power supply, and a clean operating-system installation. A platform upgrade paired with the existing 3080 Ti is likely the best value unless you specifically need the 5080’s extra performance or features.

A 5080 and a 9800X3D can consume most of a $2,500 budget before adding the motherboard, memory, storage, power supply, case, and cooling. A DIY build can usually provide better parts for the money, while a prebuilt may require compromises in the motherboard, power supply, cooling, or storage. If you specifically want a 5080, you’ll probably need to stay closer to $3,000 or wait for better pricing.

The main reason I’m considering the 5080 is the new 4K OLED display and the desire to use ray tracing. I’m more comfortable with NVIDIA because I’ve had a trouble-free experience with my 3080 Ti and I’m not very confident troubleshooting graphics driver issues.
