I'm completely new to building PCs and have been saving for years. A friend helped me choose the components for everything except the case, but I'd like a second opinion before buying. I want the computer mainly for gaming and general work, and I'd like it to remain useful for several years since my old laptop is failing. My budget is around $3,000.
The planned parts are:
- Intel Core i9-14900KF
- ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 liquid cooler
- MSI B760 Gaming Plus WiFi DDR4 motherboard
- 32GB G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200 CL16 memory
- Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2TB NVMe SSD
- PNY GeForce RTX 5070 12GB graphics card
- HYTE Y70 Persona 3 Reload case
- MSI MAG A850GL PCIe 5 850W Gold modular power supply
- Three ARCTIC P12 Pro Reverse A-RGB fans
Does this look like a sensible and well-balanced build for my budget, or are there parts I should change?

The build should have plenty of performance for gaming and everyday tasks, and an 850W Gold power supply is more than adequate for these components. The main thing I’d question is pairing a 14900KF with a relatively inexpensive cooler and a B760 board. That processor can run hot and draw a lot of power, so make sure the cooler fits the case, the motherboard has an appropriate BIOS, and power limits and stability settings are configured properly. A less power-hungry CPU could be a better long-term choice if you do not need maximum multicore performance.
The system will be very fast, but the parts seem unusually balanced for a gaming-focused $3,000 build. A Core i9-14900KF is a high-end, power-hungry processor, while the RTX 5070 is more midrange by comparison. For mostly gaming, some of that CPU budget could likely be shifted toward a stronger graphics card or a newer gaming-oriented platform. It would help to decide how demanding your games and work applications are before finalizing everything.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with the parts, but the build would be easier to justify if you had a specific workload that benefits from an i9. For gaming and ordinary productivity, a more efficient processor with a stronger graphics card would generally make the system feel more balanced. The current setup will still work well, though, and it should remain capable for years if your expectations and monitor resolution match the RTX 5070.
