I have a custom-built PC from around 2015 that still handles my needs fairly well. I mostly use software, browse with lots of tabs open, and play relatively undemanding games, so the original 8 GB of RAM was enough for quite a while. After dealing with malware and resetting the computer, I upgraded to Windows 11, and now the system struggles more when I multitask. I'm planning to upgrade to 16 GB, probably with two 8 GB sticks instead of one 16 GB stick. Besides using a matched pair, what should I check before buying—such as compatibility, speed, or how many sticks to install?

Before buying, look up the motherboard model or use a system-information tool to confirm the supported RAM type, maximum capacity, and supported speeds. Since the computer is from around 2015, it may use DDR3 or DDR4, so don’t choose based only on the capacity. A new matched 2x8 GB kit is usually the simplest and safest option if you’re unsure what is installed now.
Going to 16 GB is a sensible upgrade, especially since modern browsers can use a surprising amount of memory. Check what type and speed of RAM you already have, how many motherboard slots are available, and whether you’re currently using one 8 GB stick or two 4 GB sticks. Ideally, use a matched 2-stick kit or add a matching pair so the memory can run in dual-channel mode. A 16 GB stick alongside an 8 GB stick can work on some systems, but it may not perform as consistently, and three sticks generally isn’t the preferred setup.
You might consider 32 GB if the price difference is small. It isn’t necessary just for light gaming and browsing, but it gives you more room for heavy multitasking and avoids needing another upgrade soon. For your current use, though, 16 GB should still be a noticeable improvement over 8 GB.
There’s no universal need to jump straight to 32 GB, especially if your games and applications are modest. Start by checking whether your current 8 GB is one stick or a 2x4 GB kit, then choose a compatible dual-channel setup. If you replace the existing memory rather than mixing kits, you’ll reduce the chance of compatibility or stability issues.

If possible, stick with two or four modules rather than three. Also make sure the new memory matches the motherboard’s DDR generation, since DDR3, DDR4, and DDR5 aren’t interchangeable.
