I'm upgrading from an Intel Core i5-10600K because it has started bottlenecking my RTX 5060 Ti at 1440p, especially in CPU-heavy games like Battlefield 6. Since I already have DDR4 memory, I initially considered moving to a B550 motherboard with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. That would let me keep my current RAM, but I've also been looking at the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which is faster and currently costs about the same as the 5800X3D. The downside is that AM5 would require both a new motherboard and DDR5 memory, and DDR5 prices seem high in 2026. Which route would be the better overall value? Are there other CPUs or platform details I should consider before deciding?

The 5800X3D makes the most sense when you already own an AM4 system and can upgrade without replacing much else. Since you’re starting with an Intel platform, paying a premium for an older AM4 chip and a new B550 board is less attractive. AM5 gives you a newer platform with better future upgrade options, although you should include the cost of DDR5 in the comparison. A Ryzen 5 7600X or similar AM5 chip may also offer excellent gaming performance for less than a 7800X3D.
If your games benefit heavily from extra 3D V-Cache, the 5800X3D can still be a strong gaming CPU. That matters more in CPU-limited titles, where it could improve minimum frame rates and reduce the need for frame generation. However, the price should be very competitive because it’s an older platform with little practical upgrade path. Since your current system is Intel rather than AM4, compare the complete CPU, motherboard, and memory cost instead of looking only at processor prices.
It may be worth comparing 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation Intel options that support DDR4. A Core i5-14600K or Core i7-14700K with a suitable DDR4 motherboard can match or outperform the 5800X3D in many games and workloads, sometimes for less money. Just make sure the motherboard BIOS supports the processor, and be cautious with used 13th- and 14th-generation chips.

That’s part of why I’m unsure about the 5800X3D. I mainly play Battlefield 6, which is very CPU-heavy, and I currently need frame generation to maintain a good frame rate, although the added latency is noticeable.
