Frustrated with my new Mac: app windows and a pesky Brave icon

Hey everyone! I just got my first Mac, an M4 Air, and I'm running into a couple of issues that are driving me a bit crazy. First, whenever I open a new app from the dock, all my other app windows pop up at the same time. Is there a way to prevent this and just have one window open at a time? Second, I downloaded the Brave browser, but now I have this icon on my desktop that looks like a removable hard drive. How can I remove that without uninstalling Brave? I've tried searching for fixes, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be appreciated!

For the Brave icon issue, that icon is actually the installer. You need to eject it by right-clicking on it and selecting 'Eject'. Just make sure to copy Brave to your Applications folder first. As for your app windows popping up, try minimizing the apps using the yellow button instead of just clicking them on the dock. This should keep them hidden until you're ready to use them!

Yeah, dragging the app to the Applications folder is key. Once you've done that, you shouldn't see the installer icon anymore. Also, double-check your settings for Stage Manager; it might be causing the windows to pop up unexpectedly.

Another tip for the app pop-up issue: if you're running into focus modes or something similar, consider disabling them. They can sometimes cause windows to act up. You want your workspace to be as manageable as possible, right?

For sure! I had to tweak my focus settings too. It makes a huge difference when you can easily switch between apps without everything freaking out.

The desktop issue comes from that Disk Image File (DMG) that Brave downloaded with the app. After you copy Brave to your Applications, you can drag that disk image to the Trash to get rid of it. If it keeps coming back when you open Brave, ensure you’ve properly copied it over. Also, just clicking the yellow button on your current apps should minimize them until you're ready to switch back — it shouldn’t bring everything back up.

Exactly! I had the same issue with the Brave icon. Just make sure the app is in the Applications folder first; otherwise, it’ll keep showing up as you're experiencing.
