Hey everyone, I know very little about computers (except how to catch viruses—got a list of sites for that!). I'm wondering if I can upgrade my laptop from 2016 to make it run games better? I'm mainly trying to play Genshin Impact and Civ 6, but my laptop struggles with Genshin if there are more players and is almost crashing before I get far in Civ 6. The laptop was a gift from my late Nanna when I turned 18, and I'm hesitant to replace it. Any suggestions to help it handle games better would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Yeah, technically you could do some updates, but the reality is you won’t get far with an older laptop. If it’s still running Windows 10, consider switching to Linux for better performance, but if it struggles that much, a new laptop might really be in your future. I get it’s hard to let go, but you might find a good replacement you love!

The short answer is that it's tough to upgrade most components in a laptop, especially the internal ones. Usually, you can only upgrade the storage or RAM. Since your laptop is pretty outdated, it might be more practical to consider a new one instead of sinking cash into upgrades. You can make some optimizations like running Linux instead of Windows if it’s really sluggish!

Just to clarify, when you say "update," are you looking to upgrade hardware or just update the software? Most laptops, especially older ones, can't be heavily upgraded like desktops. Focus on increasing memory or switching to an SSD if you haven't already. But honestly, for gaming, it might be better to think about saving up for a new machine.

First off, you should tell us what specific model you're using. But generally speaking, laptops have limitations on what you can upgrade, especially the CPU and GPU. If your laptop is very old, an external GPU might be an option, but it's quite expensive and may not be worth it due to your laptop's age.
