I'm looking for a Linux distribution that gives me strong privacy, security, and control over my ASUS ROG Flow Z13 while avoiding forced account or identification requirements. I want to genuinely own and manage the device, but I'm still inexperienced with Linux, so I'd prefer a system that warns me before potentially dangerous changes rather than letting me break important components without explanation. I'd also like a polished desktop environment with wallpaper support, Steam gaming, robotics and engineering software, and the ability to build and run local AI tools. I'm new to laptops and Linux, although I'm motivated to learn. The device uses an AMD Radeon 8060S GPU. What distribution and desktop environment would be a good starting point?

Almost any mainstream desktop distribution can cover these needs. Fedora with GNOME or KDE is a good choice if you’re comfortable upgrading the system roughly every 6–12 months. If you prefer a longer support cycle and fewer major upgrades, Ubuntu LTS or Kubuntu LTS may be easier to maintain for several years. The distribution mainly changes the base system and update schedule; current applications such as Steam and development tools are available on all of these options.
Don’t overfocus on finding one perfect distribution. Try a few in a virtual machine or from a live USB and see which desktop feels intuitive. Before changing the installed system, make a complete backup and research hardware support for your exact Z13 model, especially the GPU, wireless hardware, sleep behavior, and tablet or touchscreen features. Learn what commands do before running them, and keep a recovery option available.
