I'm planning my first gaming PC and am struggling to justify the extra cost of DDR5. My monitor is 1080p at 120Hz, and I'd like a system that can take full advantage of it in games such as Dark Souls and Elden Ring. My son also uses the PC for Fortnite. I'd like enough headroom for games such as The Elder Scrolls and a future GTA title, if and when they arrive. I'm aiming to spend around $1,500 and would prefer not to go much higher. For this budget and the current hardware market, would a DDR4 build be the more cost-effective option?

The right choice depends heavily on the complete parts list and your budget, but DDR4 can still make a lot of sense for this target. A well-balanced DDR4 system with a strong CPU and graphics card should easily handle 1080p gaming at 120Hz, especially for Fortnite and older action RPGs. Put more of the budget toward the GPU rather than paying a premium for DDR5 if that upgrade would force you to use weaker graphics hardware. Also, don’t design the entire build around your current monitor—monitors can always be replaced later.
I’ve been comparing parts and found that about $1,500 is the lowest I can reach while still using components I consider decent. I’d really prefer to stay close to that limit.
