I'm considering switching my main PC to Linux, but I'm unsure which distribution to choose. I'll mainly use it for gaming and watching movies. My system has an AMD CPU and an NVIDIA GPU, although I may switch to an AMD graphics card later, so I'd like something that works well with both. I have 16 GB of RAM and would prefer a reasonably lightweight setup. I've used Linux Mint on an old laptop before, but I'm not sure whether Mint is the best choice for this system. What would you recommend?

CachyOS can be fast and gaming-friendly, but it is based on Arch, so it may require more hands-on maintenance than Mint or Fedora. If that sounds intimidating, Bazzite or Fedora KDE would be a gentler starting point. The desktop environment matters more for memory usage than the distribution itself; KDE, Cinnamon, or XFCE should be comfortable with 16 GB of RAM.
Before installing anything, make a bootable USB with Ventoy and try several distributions and desktop environments in live mode. You can compare KDE Plasma, GNOME, Cinnamon, XFCE, or others without changing your existing installation. A browser-based Linux demo can also help you get a feel for different desktops, but testing on your actual hardware is more reliable.
For a gaming-focused setup, Bazzite is worth looking at, especially with the KDE desktop. It’s Fedora-based, has gaming tools and drivers set up conveniently, and is designed to be difficult to break. It supports NVIDIA now and should work well if you later move to an AMD GPU. Nobara and CachyOS are other options, though they have different approaches.
