Do I Need a New CPU or Power Supply for an RTX 3080 Upgrade?

I'm planning to replace my OEM 8GB RTX 3050 with an RTX 3080. My system has an Intel Core i5-12400F, 48GB of DDR4 memory, two 1080p 60Hz monitors, and a 600W power supply that came with a prebuilt PC. The power supply's brand and efficiency rating aren't listed, so I'm not sure whether it can handle the upgrade. I use Linux and would prefer Nvidia for its ray-tracing performance and upscaling features. Would the i5-12400F be sufficient, or should I upgrade the CPU, PSU, case cooling, or anything else before installing an RTX 3080?

The power supply is the part I’d be most concerned about. A 3080 can draw over 320W and may produce brief power spikes, while an unknown 600W OEM unit probably has limited headroom and may not even have the right PCIe power connectors. I’d replace it with a reputable 750W or 850W model before installing the card. Check the exact PSU label first, but a new unit is the safer choice.

A high-quality 600W unit might run it if the card is power-limited or undervolted, but that leaves very little margin. For a prebuilt system with an unknown PSU, upgrading is strongly recommended.

Make sure the 3080 physically fits in the case and that the case has enough airflow. These cards are large and run hot, so check the card’s length, thickness, power connectors, and clearance around the front fans or drive cages. The prebuilt may also use proprietary connectors, so inspect the PSU and motherboard before buying parts.

The i5-12400F should be perfectly adequate for an RTX 3080, especially if you’re targeting 60 FPS. At 1080p, some games may become CPU-limited, but that isn’t a good reason to replace the processor yet. Your 48GB of RAM is also plenty for gaming.

A 3080 is overkill for two 1080p 60Hz monitors unless you plan to use supersampling, DLDSR, higher refresh rates, or a future monitor upgrade. The CPU should still handle that setup well. Since you’re on Linux, Nvidia can work, but make sure the driver and ray-tracing features you want are supported by your distribution before purchasing.
