My PNY RTX 5070 Ti has been installed for about six months and has always run quietly. Today, while playing the same game I normally play, the GPU temperature suddenly peaked around 88°C and the fans became extremely loud. The night before, it handled the same workload without any unusual noise or heat. I opened the case, cleaned out the dust, and confirmed that the graphics card fans are spinning. There may also have been a Windows update overnight. What could cause such a sudden change in temperature and fan behavior? Should I investigate drivers or software first, or consider undervolting or replacing the thermal paste?

Check whether Windows or your graphics driver updated overnight. A driver change, altered power setting, or game update can increase GPU usage or change the fan curve. Before rolling anything back, compare the current game settings and GPU load with what you normally see.
First verify what is actually changing with a monitoring tool such as GPU-Z or Afterburner. Watch the GPU temperature, utilization, clock speed, power draw, fan speed, and hotspot temperature while playing. That will show whether the card is simply working harder or whether cooling performance has changed.
88°C is warm, but it is not automatically dangerous if the card is not thermal throttling and the hotspot remains within its limits. The sudden fan noise is the more useful clue, so check whether GPU usage, frame rate, or power consumption has increased. A frame-rate cap can also reduce unnecessary heat.
I’m mainly concerned because the system was nearly silent before, and now the fans are loud enough to hear during gameplay. I’ll compare the load and clock readings before changing hardware.
Make sure the fans are spinning normally and that nothing is blocking the cooler or intake fans. Repasting should not be the first step when the problem appeared overnight; thermal paste usually degrades gradually. If monitoring shows normal usage but temperatures remain much higher than before, then warranty service or further cooler inspection would be safer than immediately opening the card.
The timing does make an overnight update worth investigating. Check your update history and driver version, then test the game after restarting and comparing the same graphics settings.
