I'm putting together a 1440p gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 7500F, and the Inno3D Dual Fan RTX 5070 and XFX Swift White OC RX 9070 both cost exactly $900 in my region. The RX 9070 XT starts around $1,100 and the RTX 5070 Ti is about $1,250, so those are outside my budget. Used hardware is also not an option because I'm financing the GPU over 12 months.
Gaming is the priority, but I'd also like to do some light amateur video editing and experiment with local AI, probably LLMs. I'll be using a quality 750W power supply. Which card makes more sense at the same price, and will 750W be enough for either one?

The RTX 5070 is the safer choice if you want AI software to work with minimal troubleshooting. Nvidia support is usually more straightforward on Windows and Linux, whereas AMD often means checking ROCm compatibility and using additional layers or workarounds. For occasional experimentation, the convenience may matter more than the RX 9070’s gaming advantage.
If ray tracing is important, choose the RTX 5070. DLSS and Nvidia’s frame-generation support are also more mature, although frame generation works best when the game already runs at a high native frame rate. If you mainly play conventional 1440p games and want the most performance and VRAM for the money, the RX 9070 is the better value.
Your AI workload is the main deciding factor. For local LLMs, the RX 9070’s extra VRAM can be useful, but AMD’s ROCm support can require more setup, especially on Windows. The RTX 5070 has much broader CUDA support and tends to work more easily with AI applications, image generation, and video tools. For gaming, the 9070 is faster overall, while the 5070 offers stronger ray tracing and DLSS support.
At the same price, I’d lean toward the RX 9070. It’s generally around 10–15% faster in regular rasterized gaming and has more VRAM, which should help it age better at 1440p. A quality 750W PSU is sufficient for either card. Use two separate PCIe power cables if your power supply provides them, rather than daisy-chaining one cable.
