I've been out of the PC-building scene for a while and currently use an older RTX 2080 system. I'm planning an upgrade and would ideally like to build around an RTX 5080 and AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D in a be quiet! Light Base 600 LX ATX mid-tower case. My budget is around £3,000. Is that combination realistic at this price, including the remaining components? If not, I'm open to using a less expensive case or stepping down to a Ryzen 7 processor. Would a cheaper CPU create a meaningful bottleneck with the RTX 5080, and are there more affordable AMD configurations that offer similar gaming performance?

A 5080 and 9950X3D build under £3,000 is definitely possible, and you may not even need to change the case. The main thing to remember is that the limiting component depends on the game and settings: at lower resolutions or very high refresh rates, the CPU can limit frame rates, while at higher resolutions and demanding settings the RTX 5080 will usually be the limiting part. A Ryzen 7 X3D processor should still pair very well with the 5080 for gaming.
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is arguably a better gaming choice than the 9950X3D. Its 3D V-Cache covers all eight cores on a single compute die, whereas the 9950X3D has two compute dies with cache on only one of them. That can occasionally cause scheduling issues or small stutters, especially with background applications or multiple monitors. The 9950X3D also produces more heat and may throttle sooner. A 9800X3D, RTX 5080, 64GB of DDR5, and a suitable 1000W power supply should be achievable within a £3,000 total budget.
For a gaming-focused build, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is probably unnecessary. A Ryzen 7 X3D chip would generally offer excellent gaming performance while leaving more of the budget for the graphics card, storage, and other components.

AMD’s RX 9070 XT is also worth considering as a high-end alternative, although it competes more directly with the RTX 5070 Ti than the RTX 5080. It can handle modern games at maximum settings in 1440p without relying on upscaling in many cases.
