I'm putting together a new PC with a Radeon 9070 XT. My main use will be competitive and AAA gaming, but I also plan to run several virtual machines and do general multitasking. My budget can cover either the Ryzen 9 9950X3D or the 9800X3D, but I'm wondering whether the extra cores are actually worthwhile. I want the system to stay fast and responsive without feeling sluggish under load. Would the 9800X3D be enough, or should I choose the 9950X3D?

The 9800X3D is probably the sweet spot here. If choosing it lets you buy more RAM or a better-quality memory kit, that could be more useful for multiple VMs than the extra CPU cores. Pick the 9950X3D only if you know your VM workload will regularly use many cores.
The 9950X3D makes more sense if you’ll be running several VMs at the same time or doing other heavily threaded work. Extra cores give the virtual machines more room without taking as much performance away from the host system. For light or occasional VM use, though, the 9800X3D should be plenty.
For gaming, the 9800X3D is already extremely fast and should feel completely smooth with the 9070 XT. The 9950X3D generally isn’t a meaningful upgrade for gaming alone, so the 9800X3D is the better value unless you have a strong need for additional cores.
That makes sense. I’ll also compare the memory options, since a higher-capacity RAM kit might benefit my VMs more than spending everything on the CPU.
