I'm considering upgrading my RTX 3080 10GB to either an RTX 5070 Ti or an RX 9070 XT, mainly for better 1440p gaming performance. I'm unsure whether my current platform will hold back a newer graphics card or whether I should save for a completely new build later.
My current system is:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

- Storage: 2TB Samsung internal SSD

Would either GPU provide a worthwhile improvement at 1440p, and should I consider moving to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D first, or simply keep the rest of the system and plan a new platform upgrade later?

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the best gaming-focused upgrade available on your current AM4 platform. It can make a substantial difference in CPU-bound games and high-refresh-rate shooters, but the improvement is less dramatic at 1440p when the GPU is doing most of the work. I would only buy it if you specifically notice CPU limitations; otherwise, upgrade the GPU first and leave the rest alone.
For mostly gaming, the RX 9070 XT looks like the stronger value if it is meaningfully cheaper in your area. It should pair well with the 5900X and deliver a noticeable uplift at 1440p. The RTX 5070 Ti makes more sense if you care about CUDA, AI workloads, ray tracing features, or NVIDIA-specific software support.
If you might switch to Linux, AMD can be the easier choice because of its driver support. For straightforward gaming, though, both cards are reasonable options.
Think of this as extending the life of the current system rather than building something future-proof. A GPU upgrade now is the simpler and cheaper route, while a new platform would give you a newer CPU, memory standard, and room for several future graphics-card upgrades. Unless your current performance is unacceptable, there is no urgent reason to replace the whole machine.
