My old Dell desktop finally died after serving me since I rescued it from a high school tech lab cleanout back in 2012. I'm trying to decide whether to buy a new prebuilt computer or attempt a build myself. I'm not very experienced with PC hardware, and ideally I'd like something with performance comparable to a PlayStation 5. A prebuilt seems safer, but I'm also tempted to turn this into a fun project. I already have a Vtuber-themed case that I bought on impulse and have had sitting around for months, so building around it sounds appealing. What would you recommend for someone with limited experience?

You may be able to get the best of both options depending on what stores are nearby. Micro Center often has strong component bundle deals, and you can assemble the system yourself with their parts. They also sell reasonably priced prebuilts and open-box machines. Costco can be worth checking too, since they occasionally have good prebuilt discounts and extended warranty coverage.
There’s a Costco fairly close to me, and I know someone who has a membership, so I’ll check their current deals. I’m still considering building around the case I already bought.
