I selected the option to update and shut down my Dell PC before going to bed. The update appeared to complete, but the computer then remained stuck on the Dell logo for about five minutes. I forced it to shut down, then powered it on again to check whether the issue had cleared. It attempted the update again and became stuck at the same point, so I shut it down once more. The motherboard light is solid orange instead of blinking as usual, but there were no warning signs before this happened. Could this be a failed Windows update or a BIOS problem, and what should I try first?

Before assuming something is seriously wrong, try starting the update again and leave the computer alone for at least 20 minutes, preferably longer. Updates can sometimes sit on the manufacturer logo while finishing work in the background. Repeated forced shutdowns can interrupt the process, so avoid turning it off again unless it has clearly been stuck for a long time.
Forcing the power off while Windows is updating can potentially corrupt the installation, although it does not automatically mean the BIOS has failed. On the next attempt, give it plenty of time and check whether the storage-activity light is still showing activity. If it remains stuck, try Windows recovery options such as Startup Repair or uninstalling the most recent update. The solid orange motherboard light could also indicate a hardware diagnostic status, so check the exact meaning in your Dell model’s manual rather than assuming it is catastrophic.
I wasn’t sure whether the problem was caused by shutting it down during the update or by normal nightly power cycles. I’ll avoid interrupting it while it is actively working and check the light’s meaning for this model.
