Is SharePoint viable as a file server with Entra ID permissions?

I'm considering using SharePoint Online to replace our traditional file server at work. My main question is whether I can effectively manage user access to specific folders and files using Entra ID (formerly Azure AD). For example, I want to know if I can set it up so that only certain users or groups can access specific document libraries or folders. Has anyone successfully done this? Also, are there any limitations I should be aware of when comparing it to a regular file server with NTFS permissions? I'd appreciate any insights or best practices you might have!

You can definitely use SharePoint like a file server, but it might get tricky to manage all the permissions. A good approach is to set up different SharePoint sites for each business unit and link them for shared folders. That way, users can see what's shared without confusion. You could also create subsites for specific functions like Payroll or Analytics if needed.

So, does that mean we can't restrict users' permissions effectively?
