Were My Interview Questions Too Advanced for the Role?

I recently interviewed for a mid-level modern workplace role at a financial services company. I answered the Intune and Entra ID questions confidently, and when the hiring manager invited me to ask questions, I asked whether the company had a SharePoint data lifecycle policy, used a document management system besides SharePoint, and had a legal hold process. I've worked with legal holds in healthcare before, so these seemed like reasonable questions about governance and compliance. The hiring manager seemed unwilling or unable to answer them, and I was later told they chose someone who better matched the business needs. Could asking these questions have hurt my chances, or was the rejection more likely due to differences between my healthcare background and their financial services environment?

Technical correctness is only one part of an interview. They may also have been evaluating communication, business awareness, industry experience, and how closely your background matched their immediate needs.

Those are reasonable questions, but there’s no way to know whether they affected the decision. Hiring often comes down to another candidate having slightly more relevant experience, stronger credentials, or simply interviewing better. Try not to read too much into one rejection.

Your questions may have exposed areas where the company’s processes were weak or not fully established. A hiring manager who doesn’t have good answers might become uncomfortable, but that still doesn’t prove the questions caused the rejection.

Sometimes the outcome is decided by factors you never get to see, such as an internal candidate, a preferred applicant, or a very close comparison between finalists. Unless they provide specific feedback, there’s no reliable way to identify one question as the reason.

The healthcare-to-financial-services transition could have been the real difference. Both industries care about compliance, but the regulations, retention expectations, risk models, and internal terminology can be quite different. They may simply have preferred someone with more directly relevant experience.
