I've had good experiences with Intel, while my older AMD systems seemed to run hot. I built my current PC around 2016 and it still has an i7-7700K, so I'm planning a major upgrade. My friends keep recommending AMD, especially the newer X3D processors, but I'm considering an Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus in a similar price range. Since gaming is my main use, would the Intel chip be a good choice, or are the current Ryzen processors clearly better?

For gaming, AMD’s X3D processors are generally the strongest choice, especially the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and 9800X3D. They tend to deliver excellent frame rates, strong 1% lows, and good efficiency. The AM5 platform also has a better upgrade path, while the Intel socket used by the 270K Plus is effectively at the end of its life.
The 270K Plus is still a very capable processor and can be a good value, particularly if you also do productivity, rendering, compiling, or other heavily multithreaded work. In games it generally beats non-X3D Ryzen chips, but X3D models usually lead in CPU-limited situations. If the Intel chip is substantially cheaper, it can make sense as a system you plan to keep for several years.
At 1440p or 4K with a powerful but not flagship graphics card, the practical difference may be tiny. At 1080p with competitive games and extremely high frame rates, the X3D advantage is easier to notice.
There is no single winner for every workload. For gaming alone, choose the best-priced X3D processor you can fit into the budget. For a mix of gaming and productivity, the 270K Plus is a strong option. Also compare the complete platform cost, including the motherboard, memory, cooler, and whether future CPU upgrades matter to you.
The heat concern is a bit outdated for modern AMD processors. Ryzen has been competitive on temperatures and power use for several generations, and an X3D chip does not require an extreme cooler. A reasonably priced tower cooler is usually enough, though the exact choice depends on the processor and case airflow.
The 7800X3D is not always dramatically ahead, especially at 1440p or 4K where the graphics card is usually the limit. The 9800X3D has the clearer advantage, particularly at lower resolutions and very high refresh rates.
