I'm currently using an RTX 3080 with 10GB of VRAM, mainly for gaming at 1440p. I found a local deal on a Sapphire RX 7900 XT for $400, and I think I could sell my 3080 for around $300. That would make the upgrade cost roughly $100 out of pocket. Is the 7900 XT a worthwhile upgrade at that price, especially for 1440p gaming?

Yes, that’s a very worthwhile upgrade for only about $100. The RX 7900 XT is substantially faster than the RTX 3080 in traditional rasterized games, has 20GB of VRAM instead of 10GB, and should hold up better at higher settings. The main area where the 3080 can still compete is ray tracing, plus Nvidia’s feature set may matter if you use DLSS or CUDA.
The upgrade makes the most sense if you mostly play standard rasterized games at 1440p. You’ll get higher frame rates and more VRAM headroom, which is useful for newer games and texture-heavy settings. If your priority is heavy ray tracing, DLSS, or Nvidia-specific productivity workloads, the improvement is less straightforward, but for regular gaming this is a great deal.
For a $100 net cost, I’d absolutely make the swap. A 7800 XT would be closer to a sidegrade from a 3080, but the 7900 XT is in a higher performance tier and offers twice the VRAM. Just check the card’s condition, cooler, and warranty before buying.
