I've been with my company for about 16 years, but our time off records only date back 8 years. I usually take around 20 vacation days annually, along with 1 day for jury duty and 2 sick days (one of which my boss overlooked, so it expired). Our facility completely shuts down for maintenance at the end of the year, which basically mandates taking 3 vacation days or risking unpaid time off. I'm curious about how this compares to what others in similar IT roles experience for time off and sick leave.

I earn 8.9 hours of vacation every two weeks—about 236 hours per year! My sick leave is separate and rolls over. Currently, I have over 700 hours of sick time saved up!
In the UK, the legal minimum is 28 days, including public holidays. My company offers 33, which is nice. Sick leave isn’t questioned for short absences, but you'd need a doctor's note for longer durations. I usually manage to use almost all my holiday and a few sick days each year, sometimes more if I catch a nasty bug like Covid.
At a big pharma company, I started off with 26 paid vacation days per year plus holidays. Now, after several years, I still go on a few trips and make sure to use my time wisely. It’s generous compared to what some of my friends have experienced in other industries.
In my food manufacturing job, I get 16 days of PTO each year, but that covers both vacation and sick leave, which isn’t great. It makes it tough to balance everything, honestly.
