After shutting down my Windows 11 PC, I noticed that many personal files and application settings seemed to disappear. The Downloads folder was still intact, but my Pictures folder was empty, and apps such as Steam and Discord asked me to sign in again. Some game save data also appears to be missing. I want to understand whether Windows loaded a temporary profile, whether the shutdown caused corruption, or whether something else happened—and how I can recover the files and prevent this from happening again.

Before trying lots of repairs, avoid installing programs or saving new files to the affected drive. Check the Recycle Bin, the original folder under C:Users, OneDrive, and any available backups. System Restore usually affects system files and settings rather than personal documents, so it is not a guaranteed way to recover deleted saves. If the files are genuinely gone, stop using the drive and consider a reputable recovery tool or professional service.
Run a health check on the storage drive after protecting your important data. A failing SSD or hard drive can cause missing folders, profile errors, and corrupted application data. Back up anything you can still access to another drive, then check Windows' drive health and Event Viewer for disk errors. Once the files are safe, use the normal Windows Shut down option and keep a separate backup of important documents and game saves.
Do you use OneDrive, and does the computer have more than one storage drive? OneDrive may have changed where folders such as Pictures are stored, so check its folder and the OneDrive website's recycle bin. Also confirm that Windows is looking at the correct drive and user folder rather than assuming the files were deleted.
Check whether Windows signed you into a temporary profile. Open File Explorer and look under C:Users for your normal account folder. If your old Desktop, Pictures, and other files are still there, do not copy everything into the temporary profile yet; first fix the profile or get the data backed up. A temporary profile can also explain why apps forgot their logins and settings.
If you are powering the machine off by holding or pressing the physical button instead of choosing Shut down from Windows, stop doing that unless the system is completely frozen. An abrupt power loss can corrupt the file system or leave updates and profile changes incomplete. It does not normally erase lots of files by itself, though, so check for a temporary profile or drive problems too.
So using the physical button could have caused corruption, but it would not necessarily mean every missing file is permanently gone?
