Did I damage my motherboard by dropping the AIO cooler?

I accidentally dropped my CPU liquid cooler onto the motherboard during a build. The visible mark looks like it might only be thermal paste, but I'm worried something was damaged. Should I clean it and test the system, or is replacing the motherboard the safer option?

Thermal paste itself usually isn’t a reason to replace a motherboard. Wipe it away carefully, let any cleaning alcohol fully evaporate, and inspect the socket and surrounding parts before powering up. Replace the board only if you find physical damage or it fails testing.

The best way to know is to test it. Don’t spend money on a replacement based only on a little paste or a surface mark. Clean everything first, make sure no pins or components are damaged, and do a basic test boot outside the case if necessary.

From the visible damage, it looks superficial and may just be thermal paste. Carefully clean the area with isopropyl alcohol, inspect for bent components or cracked traces, then try powering the system on to see whether it posts and runs normally.

I’m already partway through the build, so I’m tempted to replace it rather than risk using a damaged board.
