Can Windows 10 still handle a brand-new high-end gaming PC?

I'm planning to build a new PC after spending more than six years using Macs. It'll be a very high-end system with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, 96GB of DDR5 memory, an RTX 5090 Founders Edition, and similar components. I'd prefer not to use Windows 11 because I dislike its interface changes, bundled software, AI features, and other design decisions. If I enroll in Windows 10 Extended Security Updates, will Windows 10 remain practical and compatible with this new hardware, or would I run into driver, security, or software-support problems?

You can technically install and use Windows 10 with Extended Security Updates for a while, but it isn’t an ideal choice for a new flagship build. Windows 11 enables some newer security features by default, and Windows 10 will gradually lose compatibility as hardware and software vendors drop support. Nvidia’s Windows 10 driver support is also being reduced, which could eventually affect performance and new features.

For basic use, Windows 10 can still be stable on newer hardware. I’m running it reliably on a machine with an RTX 2080, including workloads that keep the GPU busy constantly. That said, a server or older GPU is a different situation from a brand-new gaming PC, where current drivers and platform support matter much more.

Windows 10 may run the hardware, but newer systems are increasingly optimized and tested around Windows 11. You could enable features such as memory integrity on Windows 10, though that may cost a small amount of gaming performance. Over time, driver and application updates will become more troublesome, so Linux or accepting Windows 11 are probably the better long-term options.

If you really dislike the default Windows 11 experience, you can make it feel much closer to Windows 10 by changing the taskbar, Start menu, privacy settings, and optional features. The underlying system is familiar enough that, after some setup, it may be less unpleasant than expected.
