For the past month, my iPhone 12 has been showing messages like "____.com is restricted" when I try to visit certain websites, including adult sites and the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. This happens in Safari, Chrome, DuckDuckGo, and Tor, and it still occurs on cellular data, my home Wi-Fi, and a friend's Wi-Fi. I have also tried several VPNs configured for different regions. Search results can still display adult images, but the websites themselves are blocked. I'm 22 and live in Massachusetts. No one else has access to my phone or accounts, and I don't knowingly use antivirus, parental-control, or safe-search software. What device setting, account restriction, DNS configuration, or installed profile could be causing this?

Look for anything that can filter DNS or web traffic, such as a security app, a custom DNS profile, iCloud Private Relay settings, or a VPN that installed its own profile. You can check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and Settings > Wi-Fi > the connected network’s DNS configuration. If nothing obvious appears, remove unused VPN profiles and reset network settings, then test again.
The Apple Account age may not be the main cause, especially if the block appears in every browser, but Screen Time restrictions can persist independently of browser settings. If the settings look normal, back up the phone and consider Reset All Settings—not Erase All Content and Settings—as a troubleshooting step. If the restriction survives that, Apple Support may be able to identify whether the device has an account, profile, or carrier filtering configuration attached.
Since it follows the phone across cellular and multiple Wi-Fi networks, the restriction is probably local to the iPhone rather than your ISP or router. Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content and make sure it is set to Unrestricted Access. Also review Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for any configuration profiles, filters, or managed-device settings you don’t recognize.

I had already checked the browser safe-search options, but I’ll inspect Screen Time and VPN & Device Management more closely. I hadn’t considered that a hidden configuration profile could affect every browser.
