I'm thinking about switching my laptop to Linux for university and would like advice choosing a distribution. I want something smooth and lightweight enough to keep power usage, fan noise, and system load low, while still looking good and allowing plenty of customization. It should handle everyday university work such as documents, web apps, and note-taking; a OneNote alternative would be useful too. My laptop has 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, a 2 TB SSD, and an Intel Core i7-1370P. I'm fairly new to Linux, but I learn quickly and I'm open to trying something more advanced if it offers worthwhile benefits.

Don’t overlook Linux Mint or Kubuntu. They’re beginner-friendly, polished, and work well for normal university tasks without demanding much maintenance. Microsoft 365 through a browser and LibreOffice cover most document needs, while apps such as Joplin, Obsidian, or Xournal++ can replace much of OneNote depending on whether you need handwriting, syncing, or structured notes. Try a few desktops in a live session first, since the desktop environment has a bigger effect on appearance and resource use than the distribution itself.
CachyOS could be worth considering if you’re comfortable learning more. It offers KDE Plasma and GNOME, performs well on newer hardware, and commonly uses snapshots so you can roll back after a bad update. The tradeoff is that it’s rolling release, so updates can occasionally require troubleshooting. For a less maintenance-heavy option, Linux Mint, Kubuntu, or Debian would be easier starting points.
Debian is a solid choice if you want stability and minimal surprises. It has a huge software repository and plenty of documentation. Pair it with KDE Plasma for a familiar, highly customizable desktop, or choose a lighter desktop if battery life and quiet operation matter more. You can test it from a live USB before installing.
