Can I Use AppleCare+ for a Screen That Was Already Cracked?

I bought an iPhone 17 Pro about a year ago and skipped AppleCare+ because I've generally been careful with my phones. A few months ago, though, I dropped it and cracked the glass across the screen. The display and touch functions still work, but third-party repair shops quoted me around $400, which is difficult for me to afford as a college student. I originally couldn't add AppleCare+, but yesterday my phone showed that the limited warranty was expiring and offered me the option to purchase coverage. I paid about $15, and the device was marked eligible without an obvious diagnostic check. If I wait a month before taking it in, will Apple be able to tell that the damage happened before I bought AppleCare+ and deny the repair?

The quotes from independent repair shops don’t automatically affect AppleCare+. Since Apple didn’t inspect the phone when you bought the plan, they may still examine it when you request service. Don’t assume the coverage guarantees approval for a pre-existing crack—check the plan’s coverage date and ask Apple directly what they’ll require before paying for a repair.

If AppleCare+ was successfully added and the purchase is active, the repair should generally be handled under the current accidental-damage fee rather than the old third-party quote. However, Apple may inspect the phone and can deny coverage if they determine the damage existed before the plan began or if the device failed the eligibility requirements. It would be safest to contact Apple or schedule an inspection now instead of waiting a month.

This is a good reminder that AppleCare+ is usually easiest to buy when you get the device. Even careful owners can have one accident, and screen repairs are expensive. If your phone is genuinely showing an active AppleCare+ plan, make an appointment and have Apple confirm the coverage before relying on it.

You’re right—I skipped it because I’d always been careful with my older phones. I’ll check the coverage details and contact Apple before waiting to get the screen repaired.
