Why Is My RTX 3080 Performing Worse Than My RTX 3070 at 1080p?

I recently upgraded from an RTX 3070 to an EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3, but my performance somehow feels worse. I'm using an Intel i5-14400F with 16 GB of single-channel memory, and the same system seemed to perform better with the 3070. Could running games at 1920×1080 on a graphics card intended for 1440p be causing the problem? What should I check first?

Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, clocks, usage, and power limits with a hardware-monitoring tool while gaming. The 3080 draws substantially more power than the 3070, which can expose CPU cooling, power-supply, or thermal-throttling problems. Make sure XMP is enabled and that the power supply has enough capacity. If the CPU is overheating, cleaning it, replacing the thermal paste, or improving the cooler may help.

Also check whether background programs are using memory or CPU time. Task Manager can show applications that launch automatically and quietly consume resources while gaming.

Check BIOS settings, especially Resizable BAR. A GPU upgrade can sometimes cause it to become disabled, and re-enabling it may restore performance. It’s also worth confirming that the card is installed in the primary PCIe slot and that its power connectors are fully seated.

1080p itself isn’t the problem. At that resolution, the i5-14400F can become the limiting factor, especially with only one memory module. Single-channel memory reduces bandwidth and can cause inconsistent frame times. Adding a matching second stick and enabling XMP is a good low-cost test, but check the other possibilities first if you don’t want to buy RAM immediately.

Use Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode, then install the latest graphics driver cleanly. Also check each game’s settings after the GPU swap—automatic settings may have enabled heavier effects, a different DLSS mode, or higher-quality options that make performance feel worse.
