Will 128GB of DDR5-5600 work reliably with a Ryzen 9 9950X?

I'm building a PC for photogrammetry, so CPU performance and a large amount of memory are priorities. I'm considering a Kingston Fury Beast 128GB kit using two 64GB DDR5-5600 CL36 modules to pair with a Ryzen 9 9950X. I haven't chosen a motherboard yet, although I'm currently considering an MSI X870E Tomahawk. Are there any compatibility or stability concerns with running 128GB on AM5? My understanding is that using two modules instead of four should put less stress on the memory controller, but I'd appreciate advice on the RAM, motherboard selection, and whether I should expect to run it at its rated speed.

The motherboard's QVL is the best place to start. If the exact kit is listed for the board and the board supports 128GB, that is a good sign, but it is not an absolute guarantee since the CPU's individual memory controller also matters. Look for a board with the storage and M.2 expansion you need, rather than assuming every AM5 board has the same features.

For a workstation that is not earning money directly, a Ryzen 9 9950X is a reasonable value compared with moving to a professional platform. EPYC systems can offer more memory capacity and workstation-oriented features, but they cost substantially more and may not be worthwhile for this build. Kingston is a reputable memory brand; just verify the exact part number and avoid assuming that enabling an EXPO profile will always work flawlessly at 128GB.

Two 64GB modules are generally the better choice on AM5 because they place less load on the CPU's memory controller than four modules. That said, 128GB can still be more demanding than a typical 32GB or 64GB setup, so DDR5-5600 is not guaranteed on every CPU and board combination. Check the motherboard's memory QVL for the exact Kingston kit, update the BIOS, and be prepared to run a slightly lower speed if the system is unstable.
