I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 3600 with a Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB. Would upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D make sense with this graphics card, or would a less expensive Ryzen 5000 CPU be a better value? I'm also wondering how long the upgrade might remain useful, especially if I plan to keep the AM4 platform and possibly upgrade my GPU in the next year or two.

For the RX 6700 XT alone, spending over $300 on a 5800X3D may not be the best value. A Ryzen 5 5600, 5600X, 5700X, or 5800X would still be a meaningful upgrade for much less if you can find one around $110–$150. The 5800X3D becomes easier to justify if you’re planning a major GPU upgrade within the next year or two.
The 5800X3D can be a great way to extend an AM4 system for several more years, especially if you want to avoid moving to AM5. It offers a large gaming improvement in some cache-sensitive games and should provide a solid base for another graphics card upgrade.
It depends on your budget, the games you play, and whether you’re chasing high refresh rates. Your current system is still fairly capable, so there’s no urgent need to upgrade unless you’re seeing CPU bottlenecks or want better minimum frame rates.
The improvement varies by game. Moving from Zen 2 to Zen 3 gives a noticeable increase in instructions per clock and boost behavior, while the 5800X3D’s extra 3D V-Cache can make a much bigger difference in games that benefit from additional cache. If you’re keeping the 6700 XT indefinitely, the Ryzen 5 3600 is generally adequate; if you expect to upgrade the GPU later, the 5800X3D makes more sense.
