What’s the best GPU upgrade from an RTX 3050 for 1440p gaming?

I bought a prebuilt in 2021 and want to extend its lifespan for another couple of years before replacing the whole system. I recently upgraded from 16GB to 32GB of DDR4 memory and moved my games off the old hard drive. The system currently has an RTX 3050, but I'm having to lower graphics settings more often than I'd like.

I mainly play demanding single-player RPGs such as Clair Obscur and Elden Ring, large games like Genshin Impact, and competitive shooters such as Overwatch. Ideally, I'd like to play at 1440p on high settings while staying comfortably above 60 FPS.

The rest of the system includes an Intel Core i7-10700F, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, a 512GB internal NVMe SSD, a 4TB Samsung T7 Shield external SSD connected over USB 3.0, and a 600W Bronze power supply. My case is a compact micro tower, so a two-fan graphics card would probably be preferable.

Someone is willing to pay CAD $200 for my RTX 3050, and I'd like to keep the replacement under about CAD $500, with some flexibility. I've been considering an RX 9060 XT 16GB, but I'm not sure whether that would be excessive or if there are better options for my system and budget.

Look up benchmarks for the exact games and resolutions you care about before buying. The RX 9060 XT 16GB can perform well, but 1440p results vary by game, and your i7-10700F may produce slightly lower frame rates than newer test systems. In particularly demanding titles, you may need to lower a few settings or use upscaling to stay above 60 FPS.

I’d avoid treating frame generation as a guaranteed solution; native performance or regular upscaling is a better basis for judging whether the upgrade is powerful enough. Also check the card’s physical length, thickness, required power connectors, and airflow in the compact case.

Depending on local pricing, cards around the RTX 3060 Ti or RTX 3070 class can also make sense for 1440p, while newer options such as the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB are worth comparing. I’d favor a 16GB model over an 8GB card at similar prices because it gives you more room for demanding textures and future games.

For the best value, compare actual prices and benchmarks for the games you play rather than choosing solely by the model number.

Would you choose an RTX 5060 Ti 8GB over the RX 9060 XT 16GB if they cost about the same? I’m leaning toward the card with more VRAM, but I’d like to make sure I’m not missing anything important.

The RX 9060 XT 16GB looks like a strong match for this system and should provide a substantial improvement over the RTX 3050. The extra VRAM is also useful for newer games at 1440p, especially if you plan to keep the card for several years. Just make sure the specific model fits your case and that its power requirements are suitable for your 600W supply.

If you have room in the budget, a faster card such as an RX 9070-class model or RTX 5070-class model would provide more long-term headroom for 1440p. However, those options may exceed the stated budget and could be a poor fit for a 600W Bronze power supply or a small case. For the current system, a well-priced 16GB midrange card is the more balanced upgrade.
