Can I Build an Automated Biological Image Analysis Project as a Beginner?

I'm a high school student planning to study radiology, and for my final school research project I want to explore automated detection and measurement of biological structures. My idea is to use biological images with Python or ImageJ to detect, count, and measure things such as cells. I have until December to complete it and very little programming experience. Would this be realistic for a beginner, especially with help from AI tools, and how difficult would the programming and research be?

It’s definitely possible, but the difficulty depends on how ambitious you make it. A basic project using ImageJ or Python to identify, count, and measure objects in relatively clear images could be manageable. You probably don’t need to build a complex AI model from scratch; traditional image-processing methods such as thresholding, segmentation, and connected-component analysis may be enough for a solid school project.

If you want the system to recognize structures in difficult or varied images, you’re getting into computer vision and machine learning. That can involve statistics, linear algebra, calculus, model training, and careful preparation of labeled data, so it would be a much larger challenge for someone starting from zero. Narrowing the project to one type of image and one clearly defined measurement will make it far more realistic.

AI can help you find approaches, explain code, and create an initial prototype, so building a rough version within a few months is realistic. However, you should treat it as a guide rather than letting it do everything. You’ll still need to understand the method, test the program on known examples, evaluate errors, and explain why your results are reliable. A comparison between manual counting and automated counting could make the project meaningful without requiring an advanced model.
