I'm receiving a $50 gift card on October 1 and would like to use it to improve my current computer, even a little. It's a Dell OptiPlex 9020 Small Form Factor with an Intel Core i5-4570, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, a DVD drive, and Windows 11 Pro. I mainly want better gaming performance or smoother recording while playing. My long-term plan was to gradually replace parts until it becomes a gaming PC, but I'm not sure what upgrades are realistic with this system and budget.

Before buying anything, check the exact internal clearance and power-supply rating. Storage and RAM upgrades would be easy, but they won’t meaningfully improve gaming performance. For recording and gaming, a proper graphics card would help most, though a $50 gift card probably won’t buy a worthwhile compatible option unless you find an unusually good used deal.
The biggest issue is that this OptiPlex has a small proprietary case and power supply, so most normal gaming graphics cards won’t fit or have the power connectors they need. A low-power card that runs entirely from the PCIe slot, such as an RX 6400, may be one of the few practical options, but performance will still be limited and prices can vary.
You can’t realistically upgrade this piece by piece into a modern gaming PC because the motherboard, power supply, and case use proprietary parts. The processor and 16GB of RAM are still usable for basic gaming, but the platform is too old for major upgrades. If possible, save the gift card or sell the complete computer and put that money toward a used gaming desktop.

Cards like an RX 580 or GTX 1060 usually need extra PCIe power, which this Dell’s power supply probably doesn’t provide. I’d avoid relying on questionable adapters in an older office system.
