Best LGA1700 CPU Upgrade for a Radeon 9070 XT at 1440p

I recently upgraded to a Radeon 9070 XT, which is currently paired with an i5-12400F and 32GB of DDR4 memory. My next upgrade will probably be the CPU, but I'm unsure which model makes the most sense. A Ryzen 7 9800X3D would be ideal for gaming, but replacing my motherboard and buying DDR5 memory seems too expensive right now. I'd like to reduce CPU bottlenecks without spending unnecessarily. I play at 1440p on a 280Hz monitor, mostly GPU-heavy single-player games, and usually aim for around 100 FPS with upscaling. I sometimes use frame generation to reach 200 FPS or more. Since there aren't many benchmarks showing this exact combination and these settings, which LGA1700 CPU would be a worthwhile upgrade from the 12400F?

A 13600K or 14600K is about as far as I’d go on this platform for a sensible gaming upgrade. In GPU-heavy 1440p games, the 12400F may already be adequate much of the time, so the performance gain might not justify the cost unless you’re seeing CPU-limited frame rates or poor lows. Check your GPU usage and per-core CPU usage before buying.

The i5-14600K is probably the best straightforward upgrade. It should provide a noticeable improvement over the 12400F while letting you keep your current LGA1700 motherboard and DDR4 memory, assuming the board supports it and has the required BIOS update. The 14700K or 14700 non-K would offer more headroom, but they cost more and may require stronger cooling and motherboard power delivery.

Waiting is also a reasonable option. Moving to a newer platform would mean paying for a CPU, motherboard, and DDR5, so upgrading from the 12400F only makes sense if you need more CPU performance right now. Saving the money and upgrading everything later could give you a larger improvement than moving to a high-end LGA1700 chip.

An AM4 X3D chip such as the 5700X3D or 5800X3D can still be strong for gaming and reuse DDR4, but it would require buying an AM4 motherboard because your current CPU uses LGA1700. Once that motherboard cost is included, it generally makes more sense either to stay with LGA1700 and choose a 13600K or 14600K, or wait for a newer platform.
