I have an ASUS K571GT, and over the past two months several keys have started behaving unpredictably. Pressing 1 sometimes does nothing, but other times produces several 1s in a row. Shift+1 does not produce an exclamation mark. The Q key may type multiple q characters from one press, while Shift+Q does not produce a capital Q. Tab also sometimes activates three to five times from a single tap. I initially suspected a software problem, but I'm not sure whether the keyboard itself is failing. What should I check, and is there a practical fix?

Those symptoms are more consistent with a failing physical keyboard than with a software issue. Laptop keyboards use shared electrical traces, so a damaged area can cause several nearby keys to repeat, fail, or behave differently when Shift is held. A small liquid spill can cause the same pattern even if the keyboard looks dry. Since the keyboard layers usually aren’t practical to disassemble and clean, replacement is often the real fix. Until then, an external USB keyboard is an inexpensive workaround, especially for gaming.

I assumed it was software because a broken key seemed like it should simply stop working. Since the keys sometimes work and sometimes repeat, I wasn’t sure a hardware failure could cause that pattern.
