I'm looking for active online communities focused on software engineering, programming, or specific technologies. General discussion spaces are welcome, but I'm especially interested in Java-focused groups where people regularly answer questions and have genuine technical discussions. I've searched around but haven't found many consistently active communities, so recommendations would be appreciated.

Communities centered on a specific language or framework are usually better than giant general programming servers. Try looking for Java, Spring, JVM, or related developer groups, since they tend to have more focused discussions and more useful answers. Activity can vary a lot, though, so it’s worth checking whether recent conversations are actually happening before joining.
Some of the best smaller communities are linked from open-source project pages, developer blogs, livestreams, and code-review channels. Large servers can have thousands of members but surprisingly little useful conversation, while smaller groups often have people actively debugging, reviewing code, and answering questions. For Java, look for communities connected to established libraries, frameworks, or open-source JVM projects rather than searching only for broad programming groups.
Thanks, I hadn’t thought to check project pages and code-review creators. If you know of any particularly active Java-oriented groups or streams, I’d be interested in checking them out.

That makes sense. I tried one Java group before, but it was pretty quiet and the conversations weren’t very useful. I’m hoping to find something with a more international mix of developers and regular technical discussion.
