I'm trying to regain access to an old Apple ID that hasn't been used for about four years so I can install apps on an iPhone 6S. The account is locked for security reasons, but Apple's recovery system says it is inactive or unsupported. The trusted phone number is also outdated, so I can't receive SMS verification codes. The support process keeps directing me back to log in to the locked account before I can request help. Is there another verification method or escalation path, or is the account permanently unrecoverable?

There generally aren’t community workarounds for an Apple ID lock or an unsupported-account message. Try contacting Apple Support by phone or visiting an Apple Store and ask for the issue to be escalated to a senior advisor or Genius. They may be able to explain whether the account can still be recovered, though they can’t always override security protections.
Start with Apple’s official account-recovery page and note the exact error shown when you request access or reset the password. Support will usually need to know whether the account used two-factor authentication, older two-step verification with a recovery key, or security questions. Losing access to the trusted number can make recovery much more difficult.
If Apple confirms that the account is inactive or unsupported, there may be no way to restore it through self-service recovery. In that case, the practical option is to create a new Apple ID for the phone and contact Apple directly only if you need them to clarify the status of the old account.

The recovery page says the account is inactive or not supported, and I can’t complete the SMS step because the linked phone number is no longer available.
