Is Upgrading from a Core Ultra 5 250K+ to a 270K+ Worth It with a Radeon 9070 XT?

I currently have a Core Ultra 5 250K+ paired with a Radeon 9070 XT, and my local retailer has restocked a bundle that would let me exchange it for a 270K+ and move from a B860 motherboard to a Z890 board for about $90. Online benchmarks using flagship GPUs show the 270K+ ahead, but I'm wondering whether that difference would translate into higher FPS with a 9070 XT at 1440p.

I mainly play Cities: Skylines 2, Transport Fever 3, other simulation or sandbox games, and some newer AAA titles. I'm also hoping this system will last six years or more. My case cannot fit an AIO cooler and only supports CPU coolers up to 100 mm tall, so serious overclocking probably isn't realistic.

My current system includes a Gigabyte B860 DS3H motherboard, Core Ultra 5 250K+, Thermalright SI-100 cooler, 32 GB of dual-channel DDR5-6000, an ASRock Steel Legend Radeon 9070 XT, and a SilverStone FLP-01 case. Since the return period ends Sunday, I'd have to exchange the current bundle and pay the $90 difference. Would the upgrade noticeably improve gaming performance or longevity?

The upgrade makes more sense if you’re returning a recently purchased bundle and only paying about $90, rather than buying the processor and motherboard at full price later. It still may not produce a dramatic gaming improvement, but exchanging now could be reasonable for longer-term CPU performance. Just make sure the new board and cooler fit your case before making the trip.

That’s the situation here—the return window ends Sunday, so I’d be exchanging the current bundle and paying the difference rather than buying everything again.

The main reason to move up would be multithreaded performance. Simulation games with very large saves can benefit from stronger CPU throughput, and productivity workloads may improve more than gaming does. The Z890 motherboard itself won’t add much FPS, and with a 100 mm cooler limit you probably shouldn’t plan on overclocking, so I wouldn’t upgrade solely for the motherboard or ordinary 1440p gaming.

For gaming, the two CPUs are close enough that you probably won’t see a meaningful FPS increase with the 9070 XT, especially at 1440p. The GPU will usually be the limiting factor, and your current setup should handle those games well. I’d keep the 250K+ unless you specifically want the newer platform features or extra CPU headroom.
