Which is better for programming: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Linux Mint 22.1?

Hey everyone! 👋 I'm looking to transition to Linux as my main operating system since I've been having issues with Windows 11. I've narrowed it down to two options: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Linux Mint 22.1, but I'm unsure which one would suit me better.

My primary activities on the PC include programming (mainly C++, Python, and developing machine learning and Android apps), web browsing, experimenting with new technologies in ML, doing occasional video calls, working with documents, and general daily tasks. I also like to hang out with friends on Discord and do some light gaming.

I don't particularly care about package formats or the whole proprietary vs. FOSS debate. My main priorities are finding a system that's stable, responsive, and hassle-free. Any advice or personal experiences with either distro would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

Honestly, Ubuntu and Mint are pretty much like siblings. There's not much difference between them in terms of being stable or responsive. Both are well-designed and maintained, so you shouldn't have too many issues with either. If your programming tasks tie into Canonical systems, then Ubuntu might be a slight edge. But if you’re not bound to that ecosystem, you’ll likely be fine with either!

Thanks so much for the clarification! Sounds like either distro could work for me. Since I'm not particularly tied to Canonical, that takes some pressure off my decision.

From what I’ve seen, Linux Mint is generally the safer bet for most users. Ubuntu tends to push snaps, which can come with their own set of issues. Mint, on the other hand, doesn't enforce that unless you choose to install support for it, making it more user-friendly. If ease of use is what you’re after, Mint could provide a better out-of-the-box experience. And remember, if you find this isn't for you, switching is always an option!

I appreciate your insights! I'm leaning toward Mint for its simplicity, so it’s reassuring to hear it might deliver a smoother experience. I think I’ll try it first and see how it goes!
