Should I upgrade this PC or just replace the GPU?

I'm wondering whether anything in my current build is worth upgrading, or if I should simply keep it as-is. I mostly play at 1440p, sometimes at 4K, and would like to run games at maximum settings. My main frustration is with AMD driver issues, so I'm considering selling the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and switching to an Nvidia card, possibly an RTX 5080. Would the rest of my system work well with that GPU, or would I need to replace anything else? Current specifications: PowerColor Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB Hellhound, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, ASRock B650M PG Riptide motherboard, 32GB Corsair DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, WD Blue SN580 2TB SSD, and Corsair RM850e ATX 3.0 850W power supply. I've been experiencing frequent driver timeouts, mostly when using Steam or its overlay, even after trying a clean driver installation.

This is already a high-end gaming build, so there’s no obvious reason to replace the whole PC. The 7800X3D remains an excellent gaming CPU, 32GB of memory is enough for current games, and the 850W power supply should be suitable for a high-end replacement GPU. If you really want Nvidia, you can swap only the graphics card. Just keep in mind that an RTX 5080 would be more of a feature and driver preference upgrade than a huge performance jump over the 7900 XTX.

I wouldn’t upgrade the CPU right now. Newer X3D processors are faster, but the improvement over the 7800X3D generally isn’t large enough to justify replacing it. Waiting for a later AM5 generation could make more sense, since your motherboard may support future processors with a BIOS update. For now, save the money unless you’re actually limited by performance in the games you play.

Before assuming the problem is simply AMD drivers, I’d troubleshoot the timeouts. Test the GPU with a demanding game or graphics benchmark, monitor temperatures and power behavior, and try running without the Steam overlay. It may be a faulty card, unstable factory settings, heat, or a power-related issue rather than a normal driver problem. A mild undervolt or underclock can also be a useful stability test, although you shouldn’t have to accept that permanently for a new card.

The timeouts mostly happen when Steam or the Steam overlay is active, and I haven’t managed to reproduce them elsewhere. I’ve already tried a clean driver installation, so I’ll test the card and monitor temperatures before deciding whether to replace it.

The only worthwhile upgrade would be a substantially faster graphics card, and even then the gains may not feel dramatic. A 5080 would work with the rest of your system, while anything below that is likely to be closer to a side-grade in raw performance. For 1440p and 4K gaming, your 7900 XTX is still very capable, so replacing it mainly makes sense if you specifically want Nvidia features or can’t resolve the stability issues.
