Could AI really prevent me from living a normal life?

I'm 15–17 and feeling genuinely scared by the way AI risks are described in the news. Sometimes I think, "Why should I work hard and study if AI might kill everyone within the next two to four years?" I've heard prominent tech figures warn that advanced AI could be dangerous, and I'm worried I might not even get to live another ten years. How realistic is this fear, and how can I stop spiraling about it?

Experts disagree about long-term AI risks, so it’s reasonable to care about safety without assuming the worst outcome is inevitable. Governments, researchers, companies, and ordinary people are all part of deciding how the technology gets used. Your best move is to stay informed through balanced sources, avoid panic-driven videos, and keep building the life you want.

If these thoughts keep coming back or are making it hard to sleep, study, or enjoy normal life, talk with a parent, school counselor, doctor, or another trusted adult. You don’t need to solve the entire future yourself. Taking a break from frightening AI content and focusing on what you can control today can also help.

AI will probably change school, work, and society, but that doesn’t mean your future is pointless. Technologies usually replace some tasks while creating new ones, and people adapt. Studying, learning how to think critically, and building useful skills will give you more options as things change. In two or four years, you’ll be much better off having learned than having spent all that time doomscrolling.

There are real debates about AI safety, but nobody can reliably predict that AI will kill everyone in the next few years. News and influencers often emphasize the most frightening possibilities because they attract attention. Right now, you should treat AI as a technology being developed and regulated—not as a guaranteed countdown to the end of your life.
