Forgot the password for my locked iPhone notes—can I recover it?

I have important information stored in locked notes on my iPhone. My 18-year-old son helped me change the notes password, but I no longer remember what it is. I'm worried that losing access could affect my job. I've tried the usual recovery suggestions and am wondering whether there is any legitimate way to retrieve or brute-force the password, or otherwise regain access to the locked notes.

If the information is genuinely work-critical, contact your employer or any relevant service providers right away to see whether the data exists in another system, email, backup, or shared document. Avoid repeatedly guessing if the device or account could impose delays or other security restrictions.

The best immediate step is to ask your son whether he remembers the exact password or any variation he may have used. If the notes were synced or copied elsewhere, check those locations too. For the future, use a reputable password manager and keep a secure backup, rather than relying on someone else to change an important password.

My son is 18 and was only helping because I’m not very comfortable managing technology, but I understand now that I should have kept a backup.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a supported way to recover or bypass a forgotten password for previously locked Apple Notes. Apple doesn’t have access to those note contents. Resetting the Notes password only lets you protect new notes; it won’t unlock notes that were secured with the old password. Be very cautious of anyone offering paid “ethical hacking” or recovery services, since they’re unlikely to help and may be scams.

Could a brute-force tool or some code eventually guess the password?
